Samrala is a city and a municipal council in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is about 35 km east of the district headquarters Ludhiana, on the highway to Chandigarh. Samrala is a Class III Municipality. It has a Government Senior Secondary School for Boys and Government Senior Secondary School with Basic Classes for Girls. It has an Industrial Training Institute as well and regarding further studies Malwa College, Bondli, was set up in the sixties to cater to the post-secondary educational needs of area residents by Malwa Educational Council, led by its then President, Mr. Ajmer Singh Kang. Another prestigious educational institution in the vicinity is A.S. College, Khanna, where students can go in to study science subjects, for Engineering there is Ludhiana college of Engineering few kilometers away from Samrala.
There is a Civil Hospital, Veterinary Hospital and Primary Health and Family Planning Centers. Samrala has a Samiti Rest House, a Canal Rest House, BSNL telephone exchange (supporting broad band facility for internet users), Post and Telegraph Office and Police Station(under Police district of Khanna) for the welfare of people. Samrala has it own substantial Grain Market which acts as hub for all villages nearby for grain transaction. The situation of the town on the National Highway from Chandigarh to all the principal towns in the State has greatly added to its importance. Nearest Railway Station is Khanna, 18 km to the south.
Among the most notable personalities associated with this area is the Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto, he was born and raised at Papraudi village, 6km from Samrala, at the house of his grandfather.
